URBAN FORESTRY TECHNICIAN RESOURCES

Welcome Urban Forestry Technician Students!

The Urban Forestry Technician Short Term Certificate trains students for the position of forest technician offering multiple certifications to work in the forestry industry. The technician is an employee who works under the direction of a professional forester and will undertake the fieldwork that is necessary to manage the forest. The students will learn key principles and strategies for managing vegetation in all utility Right of Ways and special attention will be placed on the electrical line clearance industry.  Students will learn basic concepts of tree and plant physiology, planting, and management of trees and related vegetation, business concepts, such as, permits, licenses, and insurance, how to identify types of pests, the method to manage pests, and the ability to identify proper pesticide used in pest management.  This program offers an overview of equipment use and protocols to safely perform job duties in careers with Urban Forestry, including, safety laws and regulations (OSHA), personal protective equipment (PPE), communication, first aid, electrical hazards, tree removal, equipment safety.

Upon successful completion of this program student should be prepared to sit for the following certifications: Integrated Pest Management, Ornamental and Turf Pest Control, Right of Way Pest Control State, Alabama Pesticide Applicator, Certified Grounds Technician, Utility Vegetation Management, Urban Forestry, OSHA 10, CPR.

Specific topics include stress management, time management, goal setting, improving listening and note taking skills, identification of optimum learning styles, reading skills, study skills, problem solving and decision making, test taking strategies, and financial management.

FOR 195               Utility Vegetation Management                         3

The purpose of this course is to provide foundational knowledge and basic skills enabling the student to enter Utility Vegetation Management industries. The course will include topics, such as, integrated vegetation management, tree identification, pruning methods, pesticides, CDL introduction. Students will learn key principles and strategies for managing vegetation in all utility Right of Ways and special attention will be placed on the electrical line clearance industry. After completing this course students will be prepared to sit for the Utility Vegetation Management Certification.

FOR 197               Urban Forestry                                                        3

This course introduces students to basic concepts of tree and plant physiology, and management of trees and related vegetation. Topics may include soil preparation, basic pruning, turf and landscape management, and herbicides. Business concepts, such as permits, licenses, and insurance will also be covered. At the end of this course students will be prepared for the Urban Forestry Certification Exam.

FOR 198               Integrated Pest Management                               3

Examination of planning, policy, and management strategies used in pest control management. This course will introduce how to identify types of pests, the method to manage pests, and the ability to identify proper pesticide used in pest management. This course introduces the governing law which regulated pesticide for sale and availability. This course introduces the fundamentals for developing and implementing effective pest management plans, maximize the economic, environmental, and social values and benefits of urban forest landscapes. At the end of this course a person should be prepared to sit for the Integrated Pest Management Certification, Ornamental and Turf Pest Control License, Right of Way Pest Control State License, Alabama Pesticide Applicator Certification, Certified Grounds Technician Certification.

FOR 199               Equipment Use and Safety                                      3

This course is designed to provide an overview of equipment use and protocols to safely perform job duties in careers with Urban Forestry. Topics to include, safety laws and regulations (OSHA), personal protective equipment (PPE), communication, first aid, electrical hazards, tree removal, equipment safety, and CPR Certification.

NEED A LAPTOP??

ImageBevill State Community College -- Student Technology Loan Program

Beginning on the first day of class, and throughout the semester, currently enrolled students can check out laptops from their campus library.  Laptops are checked out for the entire semester and are required to be returned on the last day of final exams. 

ALL students (new and returning) will need to bring the following required items with them to the Library to check out a laptop: 

  • Current Semester Bill/Statement from Business Office and SIGNED by Business Office – statement must show either a zero ($0) balance or enrollment in the payment plan
  • Current Semester Schedule – maybe printed out in the Library at no cost but it MUST BE A PRINTOUT – Showing screenshots on phones and/or other devices do not fulfill this requirement
  • IDENTIFICATION
    • New students – Current Driver’s License or BSCC ID Card
    • Returning Students – BSCC ID CARD

The College Libraries cannot hold laptops for students
All student laptops are available on a "first-come first-serve" basis ONLY
